Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan is part of Canada's Prairies, and drew its name from the Northern Plain Indians who named the land after the Saskatchewan River. With water covering one-eighth of the province, water sports are in abundance and include over 50 mapped canoe routes, white water rafting and some of the best fishing available.
Groups can draw on Saskatchewan's western traditions and rich aboriginal heritage for meeting and event themes. Western-style activities include horseback trips, trail rides and cattle drives. To the east of the province lies the Big Muddy Badlands, a vast hot area of sandstone formations, with a history of cattle rustlers and outlaws.
First Nation highlights include Wanuskewin Heritage Park near Saskatoon, which explores the culture of the Northern Plains Indians, whose regional presence dates back 6,000 years, and contains two dozen prehistoric archaeological sites. Other First Nation highlights include summer Powwows.
With about 240 golf courses throughout the province, the opportunity for groups to enjoy some golfing is never far away.
The provincial capital, Regina, is home to the nation's only training academy and museum for the famed Royal Canadian Mounted Police, whose daily parades are a staple of city life. Regina is also a rich cultural centre, housing the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Saskatchewan Centre of Arts, which showcases ballet and opera, and the Regina Symphony Orchestra.
