Québec
The province of Québec has a very distinctive character combining North American efficiency with Gallic charm and that certain 'je ne sais quoi' that belongs uniquely to Québec.
Its summers are hot and sunny whilst the winter guarantees crisp, dry snow, making it an ideal location for a range of outdoor activities.
The gateway to the province is Montréal, a six and a half hour flight direct from the UK. Located on an island in the St Lawrence River, Montréal is a cosmopolitan North American city with European flair and ambience. Its attractions include the lively Old Port area with historic buildings, colourfully hip neighbourhoods, museums, shopping, major sports teams and a vibrant nightlife.
Québec City, the provincial capital, is unique as the only walled city in North America. Commanding a spectacular view of the St Lawrence, it has preserved many of its historic sites and its narrow cobbled streets are lined with cafes and boutiques.
Both cities are within easy reach of the great outdoors. The Laurentians, home to the renowned resort of Tremblant, and the Greater Québec City area, home to Mont Sainte Anne and the Jacques Cartier Valley, are all a short transfer for adventure programmes. Groups can try four-wheel adventure rallies, float or ski plane safaris, exhilarating white water rafting and mountain bike treasure hunts for a start.
Festivals are a colourful part of Québec's calendar. Montréal hosts the Canadian Grand Prix, the 'Just for Laughs' Comedy Festival and the International Jazz Festival among others, and Québec City hosts the world's only Winter Carnival, featuring a flood-lit ice palace, ice carving competitions, a spectacular parade and a thrilling canoe race across the ice floes of the St Lawrence.
French is the first language of the province although most Québecois are bilingual, and strong pride in their French roots translates into an infectious 'joie de vivre'.
