Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province, is small in size but big in possibilities,
PEI's attractive coastline of powder beaches, soaring cliffs, coves and charming fishing villages, and scenic interior of rolling countryside, woodland and rural charm is rich in visual contrasts and is easily explored by car, cycle or foot. The island also provides groups with water sport opportunities, including sea kayaking, boating and windsurfing.
While the story of Anne of Green Gables is one claim to fame, the island is garnering a reputation for another kind of green - this tiny province of just 138,000 people boasts some 26 world-class golf courses created by respected designers.
Provincial capital, Charlottetown, is easily reached by air via Halifax, Montréal and Toronto.
Its Victorian buildings and leafy streets give it a quaint ambience. It has a lively historic waterfront area, with many boutiques, pubs and restaurants. Groups often borrow the theme of the city's historic role as the birthplace of Canadian Confederation in 1867.
PEI's population is mainly of British origin but also includes French Acadians and native Mi'kmaq. Cultural diversity brings many annual celebrations including Highland gatherings, fiddler concerts, and Irish and Acadian festivals. First Nation's attractions include the Mi'kmaq Indian Village near Charlottetown, a recreation of their traditional lifestyle.
