Ontario

Ontario is an immense, colourful, diverse province. It stretches from the Great Lakes in the south to the frozen shores of Hudson Bay in the north.

With over 250,000 lakes, including four of the five Great Lakes, Ontario is a paradise for water sports, especially canoeing, as well as kayaking, white water rafting and features some outstanding diving sites.

Provincial capital and major gateway Toronto, a seven and a half hour direct flight from the UK, is a cosmopolitan city offering an all-in-one destination for visiting groups. Ethnic neighbourhoods include Chinatown, Little Italy and Greektown, and wide-ranging cuisines across 7000-plus restaurants reflect Toronto's cultural diversity. As the world's third largest theatre centre after London and New York, Broadway-bound shows are always top of the bill and several can offer groups exclusive behind the scenes tours. Toronto comes from the Huron Indians and means 'place of meeting', and the city has an amazing array of venues for private functions. Perhaps the CN Tower, the world's tallest freestanding structure, is the best known.

A few hours east, Canada's capital city, Ottawa, is a mixture of ornate historic buildings like the Canadian Parliament and equally striking modern structures, including the National Gallery and the Canadian Museum of Civilisation, many of which provide wonderful venues for groups. The historic 126-mile long Rideau Canal links Ottawa with Kingston, and in winter becomes the world's longest skating rink and the focal point of Winterlude, Ottawa's winter festival.

Both cities sit on the doorstep of the Great Outdoors. Adventure programme options are endless. Groups can try float or ski plane safaris, lumberjack photo rallies, snowmobile safaris, wolf calling, exhilarating jet boating and mini winter Olympics.

A one and half hour drive from Toronto is the Niagara Peninsula, home to the world famous Falls, Niagara on the Lake, battlefields and forts from the 1812 war and many award-winning wineries.

Ontario is home to 133 First Nation's communities, many of which are accessible to groups to incorporate an authentic First Nation's experience into a programme.
