St. John's

St. John's

Walk down the oldest street in North America to St. John's historic harbor, and see if you can spot one of the stray 100-foot icebergs known to float by. From the waterfront, the city rises in a mosaic of colorful clapboard homes and historic buildings up to Signal Hill and Cabot Tower, the city's most recognizable landmark.

The province's diverse cultural heritage includes indigenous Inuit and Innu people, descendants of 18th and 19th century English, Irish and Scottish settlers and Vikings who visited over 1,000 years ago. A trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of L'Anse aux Meadows lets you experience life, as it must have been 1,000 years ago, when the Vikings established a settlement here.

Groups visiting the province can immerse themselves in colourful local dialect, music, and sample unique delicacies. A not-to-be-missed experience is the initiation rite of a 'screeching-in' ceremony, where groups get to kiss the infamous cod and sample the local libation, Screech.

The province's capital and gateway is Newfoundland's historic St John's, among North America's oldest European settlements, and where Marconi received the first wireless transatlantic signal, atop Signal Hill. A four and a half hour direct flight from London Heathrow, St John's has a scenic waterfront, heritage buildings and a thriving local arts and nightlife scene. Live music is a big part of the culture here and is never far away.
